Tama-Neko's Laputa: Castle in the Sky Tv Review

Rated: 7

Laputa is another Miyazaki classic and its themes of dangerous, lost technologies and the human will to surmount their challenges remain fresh and true no matter the decade. Although it may seem a bit familiar to anyone who has seen other Miyazaki films, it has enough originality in its settings, characters and situations to give it some distinguishment. For newer fans, the focus on adventure, treasure-hunting, running from kidnappers, and discovering a lost land is fun and amusing and needs little else to make it enjoyable (except perhaps a lack of bad electronica) and I would recommend it above Nausicaa or Princess Mononoke (although not as highly as I would recommend Spirited Away) to new animation fans.

Tama-Neko's Tenkuu no Escaflowne Tv Review

Tenkuu no Escaflowne

Rated: 9

Escaflowne is a series I watch every other year. I never plan it that way, but somehow it always happens. At 26 episodes, the series is long enough to really develop its cast of characters as well as a long and intricate plot without taking forever to build up to action. There aren't really any 'filler' episodes -- the story is tightly paced from the get-go, and rarely slows down for a breath once it gets going.

Tama-Neko's Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind Tv Review

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind

Rated: 9

Nausicaa is simply one of those timeless movies that many (including myself) would consider to be a classic of Japanese Animation. It's interesting because it is Miyazaki's first full length movie, and the themes that are prevelant throughout the story reoccur time and time again in his other works. His penchant for strong female leads can be seen in characters like San from Mononoke Hime or Chihiro from Spirited Away; his views on the corruption/destruction of earth's natural resources and the futility of war return in Mononoke Hime and Howl's Moving Castle; his belief in the bonds of family and friendship are characterized in My Neighbor Totoro.

Tama-Neko's Matantei Loki Ragnarok Tv Review

Matantei Loki Ragnarok

Rated: 5

Loki is not a show to be taken seriously. In fact, a lot of entertainment can be gained by pretending the overarching "deeper" plotline doesn't exist and just laugh at how silly the gags can get – I mean, how many anime make fun of Iron Chef? The characters mess up so badly it's funny, especially because as I mentioned before, Loki really doesn't care. If the show was only focused on Loki, it would be very, very boring, because all Loki seems to do is sit around the detective agency and occasionally stir himself to figure out how to regain his powers and return to the realm of the gods. It's everyone else's insane personalities that make the show even worth watching, even though their sheer ineptness makes me want to hit something with a very large mallet.

Tama-Neko's Gankutsuou Tv Review

Gankutsuou

Rated: 9

Gankutsuou is whirlwind of a series. A solid basis on a classic story of love, betrayal and revenge, combined with an imaginative new setting in space and a different sense of art, this series tries to appeal to all the senses a tv show can reach. It's not afraid to be different, and in fact seems to revel in it. Sure it's outlandish - and the patterns alone have turned off many a potential viewer. However, if you're willing to stick with the little oddities the series evidences, you're in for a treat. This is not your typical anime series - despite several mecha fighting scenes, the focus is not on action but on the story and the people and the lies they weave amongst themselves and within themselves.

Tama-Neko's Gokusen Tv Review

Rated: 7

Gokusen turned out to be a very enjoyable show for me. Initially I was rather turned off by the opening animation (which seems utterly pointless) and the art (which I mentioned as being rather ugly,) although the ending had me in hysterics because of the mix of enka and ukiyo-e. However, it was the story and character interactions, and the process of learning more about each character's history, that pulled me in and kept me watching to the end of what felt to be a very short 13 episodes. Most of the show is spent in short (2-3 episode) mini-story arcs, and it's always amusing to see how Yankumi will get out of whatever situation she gets thrown into. Her lapses into Yakuza slang are fun because in the next moment she'll turn back to her ditzy personality and try to shake it off.

Tama-Neko's Kyou Kara Maou Tv Review

Kyou Kara Maou

Rated: 6

Kyou Kara Maou is a comedy. It's nothing special, and the subject matter may turn off a lot of viewers. In fact, I consider it one of my guilty pleasures. It's a bit of a train-wreck of a series, yet I keep watching it, because it always makes me laugh (even if it's because the show is so absurd I can't believe they'd do something like that.) Someone, despite all the craziness, I found I really do want to know what happens to all these characters, although I'm worried it won't resolve anything in the end like so many other train-wreck shows.

Tama-Neko's Kino no Tabi Tv Review

Kino no Tabi

Rated: 9

Kino no Tabi is different from your average anime series, and certainly won't please everyone. The variety of stories it presents from the various countries Kino and Hermes visits are at times cliche, at times highly disturbing, or at times rather bizarre. There are a few moments of humor, but they're more in the realm of satire than "haha funny" comedy. Also, some of the concepts are mature in nature and this definately isn't a kiddie show. However, the sum of the parts is far greater than if each element was taken separately. A single episode taken alone may not be original, but if you take the series as a whole, it's certainly quite different from what's been done before.
